Best Places to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day
By Brandon Dudley March 9, 2011
For some people, the month of March means one thing and one thing only. It’s time to get out that itchy green sweater, dust off grandma’s corned beef recipe, and blast “Danny Boy” on the Ipod. And while dancing in your green sweater and cooking corned beef is one way to honor Saint Patrick’s legacy, we beg to present some viable alternatives (after all, your cat can’t truly appreciate your “Danny Boy” rendition). So before March 17th rolls around, be sure to check out these top Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations in North America:
* New York City, New York. The New York City Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is the oldest and largest parade of its kind. Soldiers, marching bands, bag pipes, and Irish community members all partake in the festive event. If you go, make sure to wear green and be sure to head to Molly’s Pub and Restaurant for some authentic Irish fare.
* Chicago, IL. Saint Patty’s day is a momentous occasion in Chicagoland, especially since each year the Chicago River is dyed green. A safe vegetable dye tints the water which can be viewed from multiple bridges throughout the city. The Chicago Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is also a huge hit and the renowned Abbey Pub and Restaurant is worth checking out (they have live Irish music each year).
* Boston, Massachusetts. The city’s population is predominantly of Irish descent, so it makes sense that Boston is one of the top destinations for Saint Patrick’s Day party-goers. The city hosts a huge parade on the Sunday prior to Saint Patty’s Day and Irish-themed events (concerts, productions, and comedy shows) occur in the days leading up to the parade. Don’t forget to stop by Mr. Dooley’s Boston tavern if you’re looking for some genuine Irish grub!
